Critic Consensus: Adding fuel to the fire, The Americans retains all the suspense and action of season one while enhancing the level of excitement... and wigs.

Rather than only offering titillating suspense about spies, undercover ruses, and (it must be said) bad wigs, The Americans provides insight into how cultural differences, misunderstood information, and paranoia can lead to overreactions and escalations.
Can we just take a second... to salute the fine hair, makeup and wardrobe folks on the show. And those who create Philip's looks specifically?
We know how the Cold War turned out, but as viewers, we're far less certain as to the fates of these characters who may lack our knowledge, but understand full well the potential cost of the games without frontiers they're playing at.
Now we have a whole new season to be ready for and I am hoping it continues on the path it laid out in Wednesday's excellent premiere episode, "Comrades."
The Americans is a pretty fascinating look at morality and doing the right thing - or certainly what you believe to be the right thing - from a side we don't usually follow.
Audience Reviews for The Americans: Season 2
The Americans concluded yet another very solid season that's becoming less about spy games and more about family drama and marriage. Don't let that fool you though, there's still plenty of exciting spy games happening not only for Elizabeth and Phil but also with Nina and Stan, that make due to very interesting moral choices and consequences. Keri Russel and Annet Mahendru are doing absolutely brilliant work and should get some award nods when the time comes. Still, some more excitment wouldn't hurt the series and some more clarity towards the spy games could help, even if it might be intentional that we're being kept in the dark sometimes.
