For all its speculative storytelling, Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams feels stuck in the past. It's philosophical, but lacking in subtlety.

It seemed dated and I found it hard to care much about anyone or the manufacture of the thought-blocking hoods.

... a cut-price version also of Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror series...

Following Black Mirror with a show that absolutely would not exist had Black Mirror not turned out to be a monumental masterpiece is like asking a Kardashian sister to deliver a speech after Barack Obama.

"Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams" is, in a word, embarrassing. From the juvenile production values to the unabashed "Black Mirror" fanfic, the show is one of the worst high-profile television series I can recall.

Dick didn't predict a future in which slow-burning TV dramas went on for years at their own glacial rhythm.

Most episodes lumber at a pace that would make snails blush as if creators thought the high concepts were enough to squeeze a full story from.

Electric Dreams is too content with what Dick already dreamt up.

But mostly, they play with familiar ideas in conventional high-tech settings: They're futures that seem oddly dated.
January 12, 2018
Unblemished happily-ever-afters are rare in this genre, of course, but even so, too many of these bleak Dreams are a few watts short of electrifying.
January 12, 2018
The main problem is that almost everything here, perhaps unavoidably, has a been-there, seen-that undercurrent to it.
January 16, 2018
Unlike "Black Mirror," though, much of "Electric Dreams" is generally a more optimistic show, with less fatalist themes.
December 26, 2017
Despite the fanciful, off-world setting of space tourism, this story had more humanity and a lot more shades for you to interpret than the series' first episode.

It did a poised, poetic job.

So -- sleek color-saturated production, casts peppered with great actors, and some questions for the ages.

There's so much more to discover here. That's always been Philip K. Dick's gift - a handful of pages in one short story spark countless new ideas and questions. The frustration doesn't diminish the experience of such a well-acted, enthralling thriller.

Electric Dreams has something that predates Charlie Brooker's semi-dystopian tech drama: the work of the iconic genre writer for which it's named...it employs an impressive roster of writers, directors, and actors to put their own spin on Dick's oeuvre.

Electric Dreams strikes the balance deftly, creating short, self-contained films out of each episode without making you feel like you need 45 more minutes to grasp the story.
January 11, 2018
Electric Dreams works because there's a fascinating nugget of insight about humanity in every episode, even if they don't always succeed.

Reality isn't always recognizable in these stories, but the characters that populate them are all too real.
