The ending cliffhanger ... was spectacular.

After a stuttering first couple of seasons, it appears the ABC Marvel Cinematic Universe spinoff's focus is shifting towards more superheroes and Inhumans, and generally ramping up the action has been a masterstroke.

What a great way to open up the new season.

The big deal in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this season appears to be superheroes and supervillans: a lot of them, and more every minute.

As always, there's just enough of a good show here that I'll keep watching, and occasionally writing about, even as the whole thing feels like a missed opportunity that's being unfortunately designed - and constantly redesigned - by committee.

As long as characters don't disappear for long stretches of time and the series is able to integrate them naturally, then it likely won't matter whether they're absent here and there. The fact that the show seems to realize this already is a good sign.

Audience Reviews for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 3

½

My problems with the first season of Agents of SHIELD are well documented. As much of an improvement as Season 2 was over it, Season 3 is at least that much better again. Maybe more so.

This was a really good season. It managed to be a great followup to that amazing second season that we got last year and it also managed to get us emotionally enthralled in the entire season all the way through. Once again we find our agents and this time around they are searching for the newly created Inhumans while trying to fend off the threat that is Grant Ward and his newly re-established Hydra. But this season is also about the main characters as we had to say goodbye to a lot of them as the show went along. We said goodbye to Hunter and Morse who left to do their own show (which they won't really do anyway); we said goodbye to Lincoln who sacrificed himself to save the entire world; and last but not least, we said goodbye to a fan-favorite throgh all three seasons Grant Ward, who also bit the dust before being the host of a dangerous Inhuman called Hive. The performances in this season was great and I must say that Brett Dalton really impressed me this time around. It almost feels like he was born to play this character, even though the actor just seems so likeable. All-in-all: a great season with some great moments and some great supporting characters, both the returning and the new ones.

This has the chance to be the best season yet. Really largely abandoning being tied so closely to the films, the show really has stretched its legs. This may show that the largely interconnected MCU is actually fracturing (especially if no mention of TV plot is made in Civil War) but maybe it's for the best?
