Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 1 (2013-2014)

Critic Consensus: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is sure to please comic book fans, but the strong ensemble and brisk pacing help to make this better-than-average superhero show accessible to non-fanboys as well.

Clark Gregg is amazing. He just gets right back into his performance. It's like he never died.

For one thing, the pilot - which aims to make clear that superheroes are starting to crop up in a world that features shadowy Wikileaks-type intrigue - lacks any compelling characters.

It's no easy feat to introduce us to each team member, and also make you like them and want to know more about them, but this is Joss we're talking about here.

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD is a terrifically entertaining action-adventure hour that pays dividends for Avengers fanboys/girls but isn't so insular that the uninitiated will be baffled.

Although the show's filming style is almost indiscernible from any of ABC's higher-budget programming, and many of the characters fall cleanly into generic stereotypes to begin with, the actors bring enough to their roles to get by.

Audience Reviews for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 1

While the first few episodes seemed "comic-booky" and didn't bode very well for the rest of the show, the series quickly began to right itself, turning into a fitting companion to the MCU with engaging and interesting characters, exciting action, and plenty of drama to keep me hooked.

A VERY rocky start begins to pick up after a few episodes, and continues to improve week to week until it ends up being one of the most fun series on television. It has more than its fair share of problems though, including entire MONTHS off the air without warning. This won't effect your viewing experience post-video-release though, and it was worth sticking through the crap to get to the great for this endearing "Marvel's The Avengers" tie-in.

This show takes some time to really get to the point of everything. The first couple of episodes are really just there to be there, and I really hate shows that have such episodes, which is, basically, every show on air right now. However, when this show really gets to those episodes that can be used to something, it's really finds it's footwork. Those episodes are extremely good and luckily, that's really the majority of this season. After the events of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" happened, it of course had it's effect on the rest of Marvel Cinematic Universe, which also includes this show. The performances from Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen and Brett Dalton are the highlights of this season and then of course the frequent guest appearances made by many different stars like Saffron Burrows, J. August Richards, Ruth Negga and, of course, Bill Paxton.

Though it had virtually unlimited potential, Agents of SHIELD: Season 1 turned out to be a rather formulaic action series. With Joss Whedon helming the show the stars seemed to be aligned for greatness, but it utterly failed to capitalize on the Marvel Cinematic Universe at its fingertips. The writing is particularly poor, as SHIELD changes to be whatever is needed for each particular episode, and the characters play to stereotypes. Most of the episodes are one-off adventures that follow Agent Coulson and his special ops team. However, the season is shaken out of its rut by Captain America: The Winter Soldier; which forces the series into taking on serial story arcs with some substance. It's not that the show is all that bad, it's just that it aims so low and seems to avoid integrating the Marvel films as much as possible. There's fun and adventure to be had in Season 1 of Agents of SHIELD, but it could've been so much more if it'd tried.
